How the Spirit of Water Received its Power
- A Native American Tale by the Yoho Nation -
In a time long forgotten, the sun was the ruler of the entire world. In comparison to the sun, the other spirits were like sparrows next to a grizzly. That’s why the other spirits of the world met in secrecy, to draw a plan on how to convince the sun to relinquish some of her power. They decided to send the spirit of the water to talk to the sun.
The spirit of the water went to the sun and formed the most beautiful crystal clear lake in front of her. When the sun saw her own reflection, she became so elated, that she promised the spirit of the water every wish.
When the spirit of the water demanded some of her power for all of the other spirits, the sun realized she had been tricked. Still, she kept her promise and gave each some of her power.
The spirit of the water, however, received more power than all the other ones. That’s how it came to be that, after the sun, water is the mightiest power on earth.
